SATURDAY November 16th will be a day Downings captain Michelle Wilkin will never forget as she lifted the Ulster Junior Club Championship cup on behalf of her teammates following their thrilling one-point extra-time win over Warrenpoint in the final.

It was even more special as his daughter, along with that of teammate Denise Doherty, scored the first goal of the game early in the second half and proved to be Downings’ only goal at halftime , both played at halftime. for the Downings, who led 0-6 to 0-4 at the break, as the under-10 and under-12 girls showcased their talents.

Wilkin also said the fans who traveled to Kildress on Saturday played their part, particularly in overtime with just Shannon McGroddy’s point, the only score of overtime, separating the teams in the end as the team of Donegal emerged victorious 1-7. 1-6.

“I don’t think we’re quite aware yet that we’ve just won an Ulster title, the feeling in the parish is great. It’s definitely something we’ll never forget,” Wilkin said.

“A special mention to the support was there was something special, they really helped us get over the finish line in extra time. Both teams put absolutely everything into this match and it’s just a shame that one team has to leave without the cup. They were another brilliant team and gave us a tough battle on the day.

“Having our U10 and U12 girls also playing at halftime meant a lot to us. Denise (Doherty) and I both had girls playing and I hope one day they can experience that feeling by themselves.”

Having enjoyed a few days of celebrations, Downings will now turn his attention to an All-Ireland quarter-final against Leinster champions Kilcock.

“We have a home semi-final to look forward to now in 2 weeks, so we are back in playing mode and our bodies are well recovered and focused on our All-Ireland campaign. We are sure it will be another tough game against Kilcock,” Wilkin added.
