Neighborhood community group concerned about ‘dangerous’ intersection

PEORIA, AZ — Peoria neighbors are pushing their city leaders to make changes to an intersection they say is dangerous.

In late October, a woman was struck and seriously injured after being struck by a car at Vistancia Boulevard and Lone Mountain Parkway.

We previously reported that a car hit a house near the intersection, killing two people and injuring others.

The same week, another pedestrian was struck and killed.

This huge neighborhood intersection has more than a dozen lanes.

Only stop signs manage the flow of traffic, leaving it open for multiple drivers at a time to determine who has the right of way.

“We all complain about this intersection, but it’s time to work together to do something,” Cicely Tegler said.

She started a petition to modify the route of the intersectionwhich now has hundreds of signatures.

“Cars will enter the intersection as people pass. It’s really dangerous,” Tegler said.

The large number of neighbors seeking change caught the attention of area city councilman Brad Shafer.

He listens to community concerns and watches drivers cross the intersection during a morning rush hour.

He hopes this is a first step towards a solution.

“It’s a very wide intersection. We can create a roundabout that doesn’t impede traffic, but slows traffic and allows pedestrians to cross the crosswalk,” Shafer said.

This project will require funding and approval from the city council, which could take a year or more.

In the short term, Councilor Shafer says they will repaint and widen crosswalks and consider adding lights to stop signs to make them more visible.

Neighbors say they’ll keep pushing until they know their roads are safe.

“It’s very frustrating to live in a walkable community like this and feel like it’s not safe to be on the sidewalks,” Tegler said.
