Tornado warnings issued across Oklahoma and schools close Monday

After devastating storms crossed the state Saturday evening and SundayOklahoma City residents woke up early Monday morning to tornado warnings across the metro area.

More severe weather is expected throughout the day, with high winds, hail and tornadoes possible.

9:40 a.m.

The area southeast of Interstate 44 is being monitored more closely by NWS Norman for tornadic potential this afternoon. This includes the towns of Shawnee, Ada, Ardmore and Durant.

9:18 a.m.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Norman said the next round of storms would intensify later in the morning or early afternoon, moving eastward through central and south-central California. ‘Oklahoma.

All dangers – flooding, damaging winds, large hail and a medium risk of tornadoes – are possible with these storms. The NWS Storm Prediction Center said a tornado watch will likely be issued either in the next few hours or around noon.

The risk of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms is highest in areas east of Lawton and Oklahoma City.

According to NWS Norman, severe storms will likely occur between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in parts of southern, southwest and south-central Oklahoma. For south-central, central and northern Oklahoma, severe risk is highest between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Much of Oklahoma, except for several western and northwest counties and the Panhandle, is also under a flood watch until 6 p.m. Monday.

8:45 a.m.

Several school districts and colleges in the state have Classes canceled for Monday.

Oklahoma State University – Stillwater and Oklahoma City Community College are both closed to campus and classes Monday due to the threat of severe weather.

7:30 a.m.

Areas of the Oklahoma City area have received more than 6 inches of rain in the past three days.

THE Oklahoma Mesonet The station near Shawnee has recorded more than 7 inches of rain since Saturday.

Cumulative precipitation since Saturday, according to Mesonet:

  • Oklahoma City: 5.57 inches
  • Norman: 3.96 inches
  • Spencer: 6.14 inches
  • Yukon: 6.26 inches
  • Minco: 6.06 inches

7:15 a.m.

All Oklahoma City Municipal Court hearings on Monday have been canceled due to the risk of severe weather.

Defendants will be informed of their new court date.

The public counter will be open to those who wish to pay their fine in person. Payments can also be made by calling (405) 297-3898 or logging in to okc.gov.

6:55 a.m.

Oklahoma City residents woke up again Monday to tornado sirens and torrential rain.

This was just the first round of severe weather expected Monday morning.

The National Weather Service in Norman said another line of storms, potentially stronger than the one that passed through the region early Monday, was expected to move toward central Oklahoma around 10 a.m.

The NWS said rain, high winds (60 to 80 mph), hail (up to the size of a golf ball) and tornadoes would be possible with the second line of storms.

As of 6:45 a.m., the second line of storms was moving through Frederick, Snyder, and Hobard in western and southwest Oklahoma.

The tornado warning issued for OKC and other metro cities expired at 6:45 a.m.

Several school districts in the Oklahoma City area have Classes canceled for Monday.

Moore, Deer Creek, Piedmont, Mustang, Harrah, Millwood, Stillwater and Yukon were among the schools that canceled classes.

Edmond Public Schools moved to virtual learning for Monday.

Mid-Del Public Schools and Putnam City Schools also canceled classes.

Oklahoma City Public Schools was already scheduled to be closed Monday for a professional development day.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning until 6:45 a.m. Monday to include Oklahoma City and surrounding cities including Yukon, Mustang, Moore and Edmond.

Act now. A warning means someone saw a tornado or a tornado was reported by weather radar. During a tornado warning, there is imminent danger to life and property. Everyone should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid windows.
