New York Forces Asian Students to Share “Sensitive” Information: “The CCP Would Love That”

Asian students at public schools in the Big Apple are being forced to disclose their country of origin when enrolling in extracurricular activities — a controversial policy pushed by an aide to Gov. Hochul now accused of being a Chinese spy.

Only Asian students are asked to provide such details about their origin, and critics say forcing them to indicate their country of origin could endanger dissidents’ families and others.

“I bet the CCP would love to get their hands on a list like this,” one parent said, referring to the Chinese Communist Party.

A law 2021 signed by Hochul — and promoted by his now-disgraced former assistant, Linda Sun — was supposed to limit data collection on city Department of Education forms to a few specific territories.

Instead, a DOE form this fall required applicants to check off which Asian countries students’ families were from.

This form includes politically sensitive countries such as Taiwan, Tibet, and North and South Korea.

Sun was meeting with parent activists who were fighting against overreach of the legislation, and was seen in photos leading sessions with them when the governor couldn’t come. Asian activists who opposed the 2021 bill remember that Sun advocated fiercely for the legislation.

Supporters of the bill said the data is needed for everything from combating anti-Asian hate crimes to community service organizations applying for funding.

Sun and her husband were arrested September 3 on Long Island and accused of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling and money laundering conspiracy – a host of charges that together paint them as agents Chinese foreigners, critics charged. They pleaded not guilty.

Tibet and Taiwan have long fought for independence from China, and immigrants from those countries in New York could be in danger if their data fell into the wrong hands, advocates said.

“We are outraged that elected officials and officials, particularly those representing Asian neighborhoods, have made little to no contact with their constituents for input and feedback,” said Yiatin Chu, president of the ‘Asian Wave Alliance, to the Post when the DOE form surfaced in September.

Legislation that requires minorities to disclose their country of origin “perpetuates the myth that we are ‘forever foreigners’ when in reality many New Yorkers of Asian descent are multi-generational Americans,” he added. Chu.
